Keep It in Writing
In Germany, written communication carries much more weight in disputes than phone calls. If you discuss something by phone, it’s common to follow up with a short email summarizing what was said ("Wie besprochen …"), so there’s a paper trail if things escalate.
Deadlines Matter
Many legal steps in Germany depend on deadlines (Fristen). Setting a formal deadline in a letter ("Fristsetzung") is normal: it signals seriousness and can matter later if you need to escalate.
Power of Attorney in Practice
If a lawyer communicates on your behalf, the other side often expects a Vollmacht (power of attorney), especially when deadlines or payment demands are involved. It’s a standard document and doesn’t automatically mean you’re going to court.
Costs and Fee Transparency
German lawyers usually clarify fees early. Many charge under the RVG (statutory fee schedule), while others use a separate fee agreement ("Honorarvereinbarung"). Asking for a written cost overview is normal and considered prudent.
