Meldebescheinigung: What It Means and Why You Need It

If you have just registered your address in Germany, you walked out of the Bürgeramt holding a Meldebescheinigung. For many expats, this is the first official German document they receive, and it is surprisingly important. Banks, employers, insurance companies, and even phone providers will ask you for a copy. Losing it or not understanding what it says can slow down your entire setup in Germany.

A “Meldebescheinigung” (registration confirmation, sometimes searched as “Meldebescheinigung meaning”) is an official document from the Bürgeramt confirming your registered address in Germany. You receive it after completing your Anmeldung. It contains your name, date of birth, nationality, and current registered address. Almost every institution in Germany accepts it as proof of address.

What Does the Meldebescheinigung Say?

The document is in German and contains a set of standard fields. Here is what each section means:

  • “Familienname” - surname
  • “Vorname(n)” - first name(s)
  • “Geburtsdatum” - date of birth
  • “Geburtsort” - place of birth
  • “Staatsangehörigkeit” - nationality
  • “Anschrift” - registered address
  • “Einzugsdatum” - move-in date
  • “Ausstellungsdatum” - date of issue

The document usually has an official stamp and a reference number. Check that all details are correct before you leave the Bürgeramt. Fixing errors later requires a separate appointment.

Where Will You Need Your Meldebescheinigung?

Nearly every organization you interact with during your first weeks in Germany will ask for a copy. Here are the most common situations:

  • Opening a bank account - every German bank requires proof of address. Your Meldebescheinigung is the standard document for this. See our banking in Germany guide for the full process.
  • Starting a job - your employer needs your registered address for tax records
  • Health insurance enrollment - your Krankenkasse may ask for a copy
  • Signing a phone or internet contract - providers use it for identity verification
  • Enrolling children in school or Kita - often required as part of the registration

Make several copies. Scan or photograph the document and store it digitally as well. You will need it repeatedly, and you do not want to visit the Bürgeramt every time someone asks for one.

Can You Get a Second Copy of Your Meldebescheinigung?

Yes. If you lose it or need a fresh copy, you can request one at the Bürgeramt. This is called an “erweiterte Meldebescheinigung” if you need the version with additional details like marital status or previous addresses. The basic version is usually sufficient for banks and employers.

There is usually a small fee, typically between 5 and 10 euros depending on the city. In Berlin, the fee is currently 10 euros; in smaller towns it may be less. You will need to book an appointment, just like for the original Anmeldung.

  • “Ich brauche eine neue Meldebescheinigung.” - I need a new registration confirmation.
  • “Brauche ich die einfache oder die erweiterte?” - Do I need the basic or the extended version?
  • “Was kostet die Meldebescheinigung?” - How much does the registration confirmation cost?

How Long Is a Meldebescheinigung Valid?

The Meldebescheinigung does not have a strict expiration date, but most institutions prefer a recent one. Banks and employers typically accept a document that is no older than three to six months. If yours is older, you may need to request a new copy.

When you move to a new address and complete your Ummeldung, your old Meldebescheinigung becomes outdated. You will receive a new one with your updated address. Keep the new version and update all organizations that have your old address on file.

What Is the Difference Between Meldebescheinigung and Anmeldung?

People sometimes confuse these two terms. The “Anmeldung” is the process of registering your address at the Bürgeramt. The “Meldebescheinigung” is the document you receive after the Anmeldung is complete. One is the action, the other is the result.

  • “Ich möchte mich anmelden.” - I would like to register. (the process)
  • “Kann ich bitte eine Meldebescheinigung bekommen?” - Can I please get a registration confirmation? (the document)
