Appointments and waiting numbers
At many Ausländerbehörden and Bürgerämter, you first check in and then wait until your number is called. Even if you arrive early, the order usually follows the appointment or waiting-number system, not who is standing closest to the counter.
Bring originals and copies
Offices often want to see original documents, but they may keep copies for your file. It’s common to bring both originals and simple photocopies. If you forget copies, there is sometimes a copier in the building that you can use with coins or by card.
Deadlines for missing documents
If something is missing, staff often give you a Frist (deadline) to “nachreichen” documents. Missing the deadline can pause or even cancel processing, so it’s normal to ask for the deadline in writing and keep the Aktenzeichen.
Payment methods and receipts
Fees are usually paid at the end of the appointment or at a separate cashier. Some offices accept card, some still prefer cash, and rules can vary by location. If you pay, you can ask for a Quittung (receipt) as proof for your records.
