Written cancellation is standard
In Germany, companies usually require cancellations in writing (schriftlich), even if you call first. An email is often accepted, but some providers still insist on a letter or a form in the customer portal. Always keep the confirmation email as proof.
Notice periods and end-of-month dates
Many contracts (especially internet, mobile, gym) have a Kündigungsfrist and often end at the end of a month. If you miss the deadline, the contract usually extends automatically. People in Germany often set reminders weeks in advance to avoid unwanted renewals.
Moving can allow extraordinary cancellation
If the service cannot be provided at your new address, you may be allowed to cancel early (officially: außerordentliche Kündigung). Providers typically ask for proof like a new rental contract or registration document. It helps to ask for the exact document list during the call.
Returning rented devices
Routers or TV boxes are often rented (Leihgerät). After cancellation, you usually get a return label (Rücksendeetikett). Keep the shipping receipt (Versandbeleg) until you receive confirmation—this is important if the package gets lost.
