Cultural Notes

How Germans Order in Bakeries

In many German bakeries you order at the counter and say the number first: „Zwei Brötchen, bitte.“ Pointing is normal if you don’t know the name. A short „bitte“ at the end sounds friendly and natural.

Sliced Bread Question

If you buy a loaf, staff often ask „Geschnitten?“ They can slice it with a machine. If you don’t want that, you can say „Nein, bitte nicht“ or „Nicht geschnitten, bitte.“

“Hier oder zum Mitnehmen?”

Even in a bakery, you may be asked whether you will eat there or take it away. „Zum Mitnehmen“ is the standard phrase. Some places charge a small extra amount for packaging or a deposit for reusable cups.

Paying by Card

Card payment is common, but some small bakeries have a minimum amount for cards or prefer debit cards. If you’re unsure, ask early: „Kann ich mit Karte zahlen?“
