Key Vocabulary
Cultural Notes
Bring a coin for carts
In many German supermarkets, shopping carts usually need a 1€ coin (or a special chip). You get the coin back when you return the cart. If you don’t have a coin, ask at the checkout or bring a chip keychain.
Bag costs extra
Cashiers often ask “Möchten Sie eine Tüte?” because bags usually cost extra. Many people bring a reusable bag (Stoffbeutel) or a backpack, so it’s normal to say “Nein, danke” and pack your own.
Packing is fast
At the checkout, things move quickly. It’s normal to pack fast and step aside if needed. If you want to take a second to sort things, you can say “Einen Moment, bitte” and stay calm.
Card vs cash varies
Many supermarkets accept cards, but smaller shops can still be cash-heavy. If you’re unsure, ask early with “Kann ich mit Karte zahlen?” so you don’t have to change plans at the last second.
