Cultural Notes
Cash or card?
At checkout you often hear “Bar oder mit Karte?”. Some small shops may not take every card, and sometimes there’s a minimum amount for card payment.
Receipts are important
Keep your receipt (“Kassenbon”), especially for returns or exchanges. Many shops ask for it, and it makes the process much easier.
Bags may cost extra
In many stores, bags cost a small amount. Bringing your own bag is common in Germany.
Be polite but direct
A short greeting and clear request is normal: “Entschuldigung…” then what you need. Ending with “Danke” is standard.
