Cultural Notes

Track changes are normal

In Germany, the departure track (Gleis) can change shortly before the train leaves. Always check the big departure boards and the display on the platform.

Seat reservations are optional on many trains

On many long-distance trains, you can travel without a seat reservation. If it’s busy, a reservation helps—but it usually costs extra.

Look for the coach plan on the platform

On the platform you often see a coach plan (Wagenstandsanzeiger). It shows where each coach will stop, so you can wait in the right place.

Validate some local tickets

Some local/regional tickets need validation (entwerten) in a small machine before boarding. Staff or the ticket print usually tells you if you must do it.
