In many German workshops, it’s normal to pay a fixed diagnostic fee first. If you want cost control, say clearly: "Bitte erst anrufen und den Kostenvoranschlag schicken, bevor Sie reparieren." Many customers also set a price limit (e.g., 300€) that requires approval.
Work Order and Authorization
You usually sign an Auftrag/Arbeitsauftrag when dropping off the car. If you don’t want surprises, don’t give blanket permission like "Machen Sie einfach alles"—instead request approval before work starts, especially if parts might be expensive.
Hauptuntersuchung (TÜV) and Small Defects
For the HU (often called "TÜV"), issues like cracks or certain chips in the Windschutzscheibe can matter. Workshops often say "für die Hauptuntersuchung relevant" because even small defects can lead to a failed inspection depending on location/size.
Invoice Details and Old Parts
It’s common to ask for an itemized invoice ("mit allen Positionen") to understand labor and parts. You can also ask to see old parts ("alte Teile zur Ansicht"), which is a normal, polite request—especially if you want transparency.
