Insurance card at check-in
At many doctor’s practices in Germany, you show your health insurance card at check-in. If you forget it, the practice often asks you to bring it later. Some insurers can also send a replacement certificate directly to the practice.
Sick note (AU/eAU) in Germany
If a doctor says you cannot work, you can get a Krankschreibung (AU). In most cases with statutory insurance, the practice sends it electronically (eAU). You still need to tell your employer right away that you are ill.
Prescription and pharmacy
Some medicines need a prescription from the doctor. Other common medicines, for example ibuprofen, are often available without a prescription at the pharmacy.
Help outside office hours
If you have an urgent medical problem outside practice hours in Germany, you can call 116117 for the medical on-call service (Bereitschaftsdienst). In a life-threatening emergency, call 112.
