Cultural Notes

Ticket Checks Are Normal

In many cities there are no barriers. You still need a valid ticket because inspectors check inside trains, trams, and U-Bahn. If you can’t show a valid ticket, you usually pay a high fine.

Validate Paper Tickets

If you buy a paper ticket, you often must validate it before boarding. The validation machines are usually near entrances and are often yellow or red, depending on the city. Without validation, the ticket may be treated as invalid.

Watch the Display Boards

Platforms and directions can change. Germans often say “Schau auf die Anzeige” because the electronic boards show the latest platform, time, destination, and delays (Verspätung).

Short, Direct Questions Work Best

People at stations are often in a hurry. The easiest way is: say your destination first, then your question (platform, ticket, transfer). A short question usually gets a quick answer.
