Cultural Notes
Paying at the Table
In many German restaurants you usually pay at the table, not at a counter. You say “Zahlen, bitte!” and the server brings the bill and (if needed) a card reader to your table.
Tipping: Rounding Up
Tipping is common but usually smaller than in some countries. A typical approach is to round up and say the total you want to pay or say “Stimmt so.” For example, if it’s 18,50 €, you might give 20 € and say “Stimmt so.”
Water: With or Without Fizz
When you order water, you’ll often be asked “mit oder ohne Kohlensäure?” Sparkling water is very common in Germany. If you want still water, say “ohne Kohlensäure” or “stilles Wasser.”
Getting the Server’s Attention
To get a server’s attention, say “Entschuldigung” and make eye contact. Snapping fingers, waving aggressively, or calling “Kellner!” loudly is considered rude.
