Using “Sie” in Interviews
In Germany, people almost always use formal “Sie” in job interviews. Switch to “du” only if it is clearly offered to you, even if the company culture seems very relaxed.
Concrete Examples Matter
In many German interviews, you are asked about specific situations: What was the task, what did you do, and what was the result? Short, clear examples often work better than general statements.
Salary as Annual Gross Pay
When discussing salary, people in Germany usually state annual gross pay (“brutto im Jahr”). It is common to add that your expectation depends on the overall package, such as bonus, vacation days, home office, or training.
Notice Periods Are Normal
Notice periods are standard in Germany. A realistic start date (for example, “in six weeks”) sounds more credible than “tomorrow,” because employers plan with notice periods and handovers.
