Dialogue

Neighbor

Hi, bist du neu hier im Haus?

Hi, are you new in the building?

You

Ja, erst seit ein paar Tagen. Ich bin Alex.

Yes, I've only been here for a few days. I'm Alex.

Neighbor

Ich bin Sam, wohne im dritten Stock.

I'm Sam, I live on the third floor.

You

Freut mich, Sam.

Nice to meet you, Sam. I live on the second floor, right next to the elevator.

Neighbor

Ah, dann sind wir fast Nachbarn. Wie gefällt dir die Wohnung?

Ah, then we're almost neighbors. How do you like the apartment?

You

Ganz gut.

Pretty good. It's quiet and bright, that's important to me.

Neighbor

Super. Wenn du was brauchst, sag einfach Bescheid.

Great. If you need anything, just let me know.

You

Danke!

Thanks! I have a quick question: where exactly is the basement?

Neighbor

Unten links, hinter der schweren Tür. Auf deinem Abteil steht deine Nummer.

Downstairs on the left, behind the heavy door. Your storage unit has your number on it.

You

Perfekt, danke. Und wo stehen die Mülltonnen?

Perfect, thanks. And where are the trash bins?

Neighbor

Hinten im Hof. Papier, Bio und Restmüll sind getrennt.

In the back courtyard. Paper, organic waste, and residual waste are separated.

You

Okay, gut zu wissen. Ich will nichts falsch machen.

Okay, good to know. I don't want to do anything wrong.

Neighbor

Kein Stress.

No worries. Oh, I saw a package for you downstairs.

You

Echt?

Really? I wasn't home when the delivery guy came.

Neighbor

Yes, it's downstairs by the mailboxes. The name matches, but the floor isn't written on it.

You

Dann ist es meins. Kannst du es mir kurz hochbringen?

Then it's mine. Can you bring it up to me for a moment?

Neighbor

Klar, warte kurz. Du heißt doch Alex, oder?

Sure, wait a second. You're Alex, right?

You

Genau. Und falls du mal Hilfe brauchst, sag einfach.

Exactly. And if you ever need help, just say so.

Neighbor

Danke. Übrigens: Wir haben hier Ruhezeiten ab 22 Uhr.

Thanks. By the way: we have quiet hours from 10 p.m.

You

Good, thanks for the heads-up. I sometimes listen to music in the evening, but not very loudly.

Neighbor

Alles gut.

No worries. Last week it was just a little loud in the hallway once.

You

Oh, war das wegen einer Party?

Oh, was that because of a party?

Neighbor

Yes, someone was still talking late and closed the doors loudly.

You

Verstehe.

I understand. If I'm ever too loud, please tell me directly.

Neighbor

I will. And if a package for you ever ends up at my place, just let me know.

You

That's kind, thanks. I hope I don't miss another one right away.

Neighbor

Hier ist übrigens dein Paket. Es ist ganz schön schwer.

By the way, here is your package. It's pretty heavy.

You

Oh wow, danke dir! Ich schulde dir was.

Oh wow, thank you! I owe you one.

Neighbor

Quatsch. Vielleicht trinken wir mal zusammen einen Kaffee.

Don't mention it. Maybe we can have a coffee together sometime.

You

Gern. Sag einfach Bescheid, wenn es dir passt.

Sure. Just let me know when it works for you.

Cultural Notes

Quiet Hours in Apartment Buildings

In many German apartment buildings there are unofficial or official quiet hours (Ruhezeiten), often from 22:00 to 6:00 and sometimes also at midday. Even if it’s not posted, neighbors expect less noise in the hallway, no loud music, and no door slamming late at night.

Packages and Neighbors

It’s common for delivery drivers to leave parcels with a neighbor, a parcel shop, or a locker if the recipient isn’t home. In some buildings, a package may also be left in the entrance area, but that depends on the building and the delivery service. Neighbors will often hand the package over later, and a quick thank-you is usually enough.

Trash Separation

Waste separation is taken seriously in Germany. Buildings usually have separate bins for paper (Papier), bio waste (Bio), residual waste (Restmüll), and sometimes packaging (Gelber Sack/Tonne) and glass containers nearby. If you’re unsure, asking a neighbor is normal.

Hallway Etiquette

The hallway (Flur/Treppenhaus) is a shared space. People generally keep it clear, greet each other briefly, and try not to block the elevator or stairwell. Being polite and direct about small issues helps keep a good relationship in the Hausgemeinschaft.
